It’s a hard choice but election day looms

(…) City hall’s stunted version of democracy, which allows a coterie of the mayor’s loyalists form the executive committee and make all decisions, consigns city council to near-irrelevance. It deprives Montreal of useful debate on city business and it yields bad decisions. Bergeron is the only one who’d empower council.
So far as taxes go, Bergeron has the wisest long-term strategy for keeping the budget in check. His curbing pseudo-competition among contractors could save huge sums. And his ambitious plan to stem the flight of the middle class to the off-island could slow the hemorrhaging of the tax base.
Bergeron, then, clearly comes out ahead on all matters except sovereignty. (…)
